Our economic intuition builds on the varying price of risk within equity markets. In this research, we verify this conjecture by doing so, we demonstrate a new predictor for international stock returns: the misery index. If the macroeconomic welfare determines the risk aversion, and the markets are at least partially segmented, then the MI levels should contain valuable information about the cross-section of country equity risk premia. We proxy the economic discomfort with the misery index (MI)-which aggregates information on both unemployment and inflation.
